I finished Ano Hana today, wasn’t sure if I’d be able to. After the first episode I burst into tears, and I mean proper sobbing, I couldn’t speak.
Ano Hana is the story of Jintan and his former group of friends. I say former because they’re not really friends anymore after one of them, Menma, died when they were much younger. It is the story of the group attempting to figure out Menma’s wish so she can move on (she appears to Jintan and no one else).
I found it extremely hard to take at first because I’ve been there, I’ve been through the loss of a best friend and drifted away from others because of it. The feeling of wanting to see that person again, that feeling of wanting to revisit different places and things with your old friends, yeah, I’ve had it all.
Basically, Ano Hana was fantastic. Yes, it broke my heart, but more than that, it made me think of my friend and anything that does that is good in my books.
Watch it, it’s only 11 episodes but be prepared to fall in love with Menma and the others and be prepared to have your heart broken, melted and broken again.
